Known as "Tetsubin" in Japanese, these cast iron tea pots were originally designed to heat water over an open flame. Large versions were often left suspended over the hearth to provide warmth and humidity to the dwelling in old Japan. In the mid-19th century, smaller ornately desinged cast iron tea pots began to appear for brewing and serving tea. Today's Tetsubin, with their fine raised relief designs, are admired and collected not only for their delicacy, but also for their ability to brew a perfect cup of tea.
